She is Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at Boston University and a cardiologist at Boston Medical Center. She is the author of over 900 peer-reviewed publications that focus on the genetics, epidemiology, and prognosis of a variety of cardiovascular conditions and markers, including atrial fibrillation, vascular function, and systemic inflammation.

Søren Paaske Johnsen, Clinical Professor and Senior Physician in the Department of Clinical Medicine, AAU, says:

"Our collaboration with Professor Emelia J. Benjamin started many years ago and has resulted in a number of joint publications in highly ranked journals. The collaboration has also been instrumental in attracting external funding to Aalborg University. Emelia has generously provided access to valuable U.S. data, has been a caring host on research visits to Boston, and most importantly has provided valuable time and dedication to our joint projects, including mentoring junior colleagues. I am very proud that we have recommended Professor Emelia J. Benjamin for an honorary doctorate at AAU," says Søren Paaske Johnsen, Clinical Professor and Senior Physician, Department of Clinical Medicine, AAU.

Professor Emelia J. Benjamin's research contributions have had a significant impact on bridging the gap between academia and clinical practice, enabling the integration of epidemiological insights into clinical, person-centred decision-making. In addition, the future honorary doctorate recipient is also an active and prominent voice on diversity, equality and inclusion, in relation to health issues and in academia, such as through her role as deputy chair for "Faculty Development and Diversity" at Boston University.

The award to Professor Emelia J. Benjamin of an AAU honorary doctorate will take place at the university’s annual celebration on 4 April 2025.
