Translational Research Collaborations (TReCs)

A program that aims to ensure collaboration between clinical and non-clinical researchers at Aalborg University.

Application Form TReCs 2026

Objective and Content

The objective of the initiative is to support research with a focus on clinical impact and digital health.

A TReC is established as a collaboration between a clinician and a non-clinician. Both researchers must be employed at SUND. In this context, a clinician is defined as a researcher employed in a clinical department or in general practice.

There is no requirement for the researchers to come from different departments. The two principal applicants constitute the co-chairmanship of the TReC. A TReC consists of a minimum of six key members (senior researchers, not necessarily employed at SUND/AAU), including the chairs, as well as 2–4 junior researchers. All key members must contribute substantially to the purpose of the TReC, and their specific contributions must be described in the application for establishing a TReC.

Deadline for applications: 1 October 2026. Only applications that use the application form are accepted.

TReCs are evaluated annually at a Faculty Management meeting through a short status presentation focusing on research (key scientific results, publications, and external funding obtained) as well as finances. In the Faculty Management’s evaluation of the TReC, execution of the plan for securing external funding will be a key parameter.

Funding

A TReC is granted DKK 3.2 million over three years. The funding is awarded under the following conditions:

  • It is required to recruit new university-employed researchers at minimum postdoctoral level in both environments to support and develop the TReC. Positions must be filled through open calls.
  • It is expected that TReC funding is leveraged with funding from other external sources through new applications. A plan for securing external funding must be developed as part of the TReC application.
  • Expenses for operating costs and network activities may amount to a maximum of DKK 300,000.
  • The funds cannot be used for PhD positions, technical/administrative staff, or buy-out of academic staff time (VIP buy-out).

Selection and Evaluation Process for TReCs

  • TReCs are selected through an open call for applications, with a focus on digital health and clinical impact.
  • Assessment criteria: documented research excellence within the given field, a clear objective for clinical impact, and a plan for applications for external funding.
  • Applications are assessed by the Vice Dean for Research and Innovation and the two Vice Heads of Department for Research. The assessment committee submits a recommendation to the Dean, who makes the final decision on selection.
