The old paradigm
New medications are introduced that after thorough randomized trials on a large group of patients show better efficacy than the old medications. The rationale being that if a new medication works better on a group of patients then it will likely work better on individual patients.
The New Paradigm
Personalized medicine also takes individual differences in genetics, environment and history into account. The knowledge extracted from the large amounts of data serves as an enormous experience base. We learn from the experiences of others, and we can then better plan the treatment that is most likely to be right for the individual patient.
What best suits the individual patient
Personalized medicine is about selecting the treatment that best suits the individual patient. A prerequisite for our ability to do this is understanding and taking into account the genetic profile of each individual patient – and also having detailed insight into the development of the disease and the clinical data which vary individually. It is a matter of combining and deciphering these enormous amounts of data.
Finding solutions together
Experts in medicine, biostatistics, data management, genetics and molecular biology work together to process and interpret the large amounts of data. The data is combined and interpreted, providing knowledge that makes it possible to identify the best treatment for the individual patient.
Great potential for health
The many sources of knowledge about diseases and risks hold great potential for health. Access to much larger amounts of data will enable the healthcare system to better diagnose, risk stratify and, in the long term, develop new medicines.
